Chairman’s Chat

A warm welcome to Arnall Drive to the players, spectators, and management team of this afternoon’s visitors Broadwell Amateurs.

Last Saturday’s match away at SGS didn’t go to plan with the 1st team going down 3-0 to a youthful home side. It wasn’t a great weekend for the club with 5 defeats and just one draw across the club, two of the losses were Cup defeats both on penalties, however, it is fair to say that much improvement is required across the club.

If you can help with sponsoring a match, player, or pitch side advertising board, or would just like to help and get involved with the running of the club please speak to myself or to another committee member who will be pleased to speak to you about any potential involvement.

Finally, please remember ‘we win together, we lose together but most importantly we stick together’

Manager's

Match Preview

A warm welcome to the players, management and spectators of Broadwell Amateurs.

Following disappointing performances and results against Bromley Heath and Cheltenham Civil Service, it has been refreshing to see a different side to Henbury & Rockleaze, with two draws and a win built upon a solid foundation of hard graft.  Whilst I've always backed my players to be able to 'outfootball' any side in the division, this has sometimes come at the expense of being too open, and not always matching the work-rate of opposition sides.  We had built up a  reputation of being 'soft', so it's been heartening to now go back to basics, with the focus being on putting in an honest performance and making ourselves hard to beat.  Progress has definitely been made on that front, however, there is still some way to go, though thankfully we have time left in the season to dig ourselves out of the current predicament.

The hard fought win away at Ruardean typified the grit and graft approach that has been demanded recently, with the lads demonstrating a new found steel and discipline.  I felt we kept our shape very well, yielding very few chances to an in form Ruardean side, but also rode our luck at times, with a few deflections falling favourably, where perhaps in previous weeks that was not  the case.  Of special mention too were Drew Sawdon with his first ever senior hattrick and a complete all round performance; and to 'keeper Jordan Dunning too, who in tricky conditions, held onto every shot and cross, pulling off two terrific saves in the process.

Last week's performance against a strong Gifford side was a setback, however, owing to availability and injuries, was not wholly unsurprising nor one which we'll need to dwell too much on.  Despite all that, the scoreline flattered Gifford, who scored twice late on as we pushed for an equaliser.

More grit and determination will be required today against a Broadwell side, who like ourselves, have also had a mixed start to the season.

Hope you all enjoy today's fixture.

p9

JORDAN DUNNING –GOALKEEPER

No.1 ‘keeper, Jordan had a sensational 2023-24 season with 8 clean sheets and a number of top performances which contributed to making the team so hard to beat Jordan dominates his area and makes collecting balls into the box look effortless. His massive kicks have also been known to catch a few teams out

HARRY TRETT – GOALKEEPER

Former Newport County stopper, Trett brings a commanding presence to the side, blending pin-point distribution with excellent shot-stopping

TASMAN ROOK – FULL BACK

Tas joined the club in the second half of the 2022/23 season from Chippenham Town, but a series of injuries has limited his appearances to date. A very gifted player, Tas reads the game situation very well and has proven to be adaptable in a number of shapes. If he can stay fit, one to watch for the future

PETER IRELAND – FULL BACK Nicest lad in the club, Pete nonetheless puts it all in on the pitch and is a true competitor. Not the most prolific in front of goal, Pete has nonetheless scored his annual goal (a sublime chip) early this season, which will take the pressure off.
p10

BLERAN THAQI

FULL or / CENTRE BACK After a breakthrough season, former Henbury U18s player Bleran has starred throughout preseason with a number of mature performances. Strong both defensively and in possession, Bleran has excellent potential and will be one to watch for the future

JORDAN BUCKETT (CAPT) – CENTRE BACK A natural leader on and off the pitch, Jordan has matured well into the captaincy, leading by example through consistently putting in strong performances.

GEORGE JAMES – CENTRE BACK George alternates between centre back and centre forward, both positions he has become adept at. Despite a questionable decision to don white boots this season, George has good feet, excellent vision and passing range, making him a real asset to the side

OLIVER WOOLLAND – CENTRE BACK Ollie currently holds the record of ‘most spells with the Club’ jointly with Jay Moore. A versatile player, former Southampton academy player, Ollie can play anywhere along the back or in midfield

p11

ADAM PARKES –

CENTRE BACK

Adam is another strong centre back who has proven during preseason to be equally strong in the air and with the ball at his feet. Adam likes to drive with the ball and maraud forwards. He can also bring a Delap style throw as his party trick.

CAMERON TARR – CENTRE BACK

Back after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury, Cam is a great addition to the side, bringing a wealth of experience. A strong, physical presence at back, Cam is excellent in the air and a handful for opposition forwards.

MARCUS WILLIAMS (VICE CAPT) – MIDFIELD Club stalwart, after starting at Under 6’s with Rockleaze Marcus is equally adept at fullback or midfield. A tenacious player, Marcus is a nightmare to play against, winning a lot of ball, and whose low centre of gravity makes him very hard to dispossess.

DREW SAWDON – MIDFIELD

Hard hitting midfielder hailing from the North, 2023-24 Player’s Player of the Season, Drew enjoyed an outstanding first season in the 1sts, ending up as joint top goal scorer (16) as well as being a dominating presence in the midfield.

p12

SAMUEL BAILEY –

MIDFIELD

Silent assassin, bandit-Bailey is a classy midfielder who both links up play and scores goals through his late runs into the box.

BRANDON BOONTAM – MIDFIELD

When you’re that good, you can afford to be a little bit lazy… Bran is an outstanding player, who from time-to-time gets his freekicks on target. Excellent close control and strength had made Brandon one of the first names on the teamsheet

MATTHEW HARRISON – MIDFIELD

Matt is a classy player (like a fine wine) who brings both calmness and an engine to the midfield. Great positional awareness means that Matt rarely needs to sprint, which is just as well

JONATHAN WEBB – MIDFIELD

Jon is your typical box to box midfielder – strong in the tackle, good feet, and likes to drive with the ball. Standing tall at 6’3”Jon is an aerial threat too. Jon has a fierce shot on him too.

p13

KACPER KALKOWSKI –

WINGER

Kacper is incredibly talented – a tricky winger who has great feet and an eye for goal. He has excellent set piece delivery, bagging a number of assists last season.

NICHOLAS JONES – WINGER

Former Cribbs winger, Nick brings pace, experience and a winning mentality to the side. Nick loves to get forwards with his mazy runs, but is equally adept defensively, making him a real asset on the left.

FRASER BUTT – WINGER

Former Gloucester City academy player, Fraser is a mercurial talent with an eye for goal, as well as being a set piece specialist. Able to play practically any position, Fraser is incredibly versatile. Not the keenest trainer, Fraser nonetheless does it where it counts on the pitch.

TATE SHAW – WINGER

He might be built like p!@#, but Tate brings extreme pace to the side, and is an excellent finisher, as demonstrated by his well taken goals in preseason games against Cribbs and Bitton

p14

DANIEL WEBB –

FORWARD Tour and social secretary, Webby is also a Gloucestershire County League veteran, having terrorised opposition with his skill, movement and goals for a number of years. Joint top goal scorer (16) last season, whilst chipping in with a number of assists, Webby will be looking to add to his tally this year

JAMES GOULDEN – FORWARD

Sporting a suspect tache and frosted tips, when not taking long coach trips across Portugal, James is a tall and tricky forward. Backed with a great touch and good off the ball movement, James is an exciting talent and one to watch for the future.

JENSON BEARD – FORWARD

Jenson is swiftly becoming the complete striker. Bringing pace, physicality, work-rate, as well as guile, Jenson finished the 2023-24 season as joint top goal scorer (16). An exciting prospect, we hope to see Jenson continue on this trajectory

JORDAN DENT – FORWARD

Despite a string of injuries over the last few seasons, “Barry” Dent is nonetheless a quality forward with an eye for goal. Narrowly missing out on the Club golden boot last season, despite only returning to fitness for the second half of the season, Jordan will look to continue this form into the 2024-25 season. Jordan is a liability on a night out though.

p15

PETER BRADBURY – MANAGER

Long serving manager, into his 14th season having managed the Club’s Reserves, A team and B team previously. Now into a 7th season with the 1st team, Bradders is looking to attain promotion for the Club after last season’s 3rd placed finish.

LEE DOUGLAS – ASSISTANT MANAGER Long suffering assistant manager to Bradders, Lee has been signed up for another season. Lee is a generous man who is well loved and respected by everyone in the Club. Known to be quite loud, from time to time, avoid standing directly in his path

JASON TARR – ASSISTANT MANAGER New addition to the management team for the 2024-25 season, Jason is an excellent coach, but also a calm head with a wealth of experience on matchday

MATT DYER – ASSISTANT MANAGER Matt rejoins the Club after a spell as video analyst for Cribbs and hopes to bring his expertise to Henbury & Rockleaze

HISTORY

Broadwell Football Club was formed in 1905 by the local working men and originally played at “The Purples” Coalway. In the 1930s Broadwell moved to play at “Wynols Hill” where they stayed until 1947, when they moved again to what is now known as “The Hawthorns”. This was done with the help of the two late trustees, Mr Bert Ruck, and Mr Frank Haviland.

Over the years various facilities were used such as “the Rising Sun “, church hall, and the local working men’s club. However, in 1963 with the help of the chairperson, Mr Rube Kibble,Secretary William Smith and committee men Mr Cyril Hamblin, a new changing quarter was officially opened by referee Mr Tom Finney.
These new changing quarters were totally funded by the club’s own money after refusal of a grant by both the G.F.A. and F.A.

In 1982, a bar facility was opened by the late president Mr. Hubert Smith and seven years later a new bar, skittles alley, kitchen, and referees changing room were added by a dedicated bunch of Broadwell supporters and sponsors.

The football social club has a strong golf society which plays twice a year open to all club members young or old regardless of ability

The football club currently run three senior sides, which play on a Saturday. Broadwell won the G.F.A. Senior Amateur cup north

in its inaugural year in 1925-26 and reached the final on two other occasions, losing too Charlton Kings in 1947-48 and Bishops Cleeve in 1964-65. Other honours over the years have been the northern senior league division one championship in 1925-26,1946-47 and division two runners up in 1976-77. Runners up in the G.F.A. Challenge trophy season 1998-99. Winning the Northern Senior league again in 1993-94 enabled them to gain promotion to the county league, before being voted from the league three seasons later.

Broadwell’s most famous player was the late Colin Hamblin who was also went on to play for the county; a trophy cabinet in his honour is proudly displayed in the club house.

2006-07 Season the first eleven finished as runners up to Tuffley Rovers in Northern Senior league Division 1. After a run of eighteen games without defeat a bad run of five defeats in the last eight games stopped them winning the league.

Broadwell lost to Tuffley Rovers at Harrow Hill in the GFA senior county cup final the same season.

Broadwell were crowned Senior North County Cup Winners in season 2008-09 beating Shortwood Res 2-1 in the final at Slimbridge Afc.

HISTORY continued

Season 2009-10 the first team lost in the semi-finals of the GFA county cup and finished third in the league. The club continually finished in the top five for the next five seasons.

2014-15 Season saw the first team win the northern senior league title, win the Reg Davies memorial league cup, and come runners up to Brockworth Albion in the senior north county cup.
The clubs committee committed to changing room improvements and without any funding built new away changing rooms along with referee/assistants changing rooms, completed in April 2015. After a good first campaign finishing sixth under Gary Hurcombe the first team were
managed by Lee Williams and Scott Albon finishing 12th in the league season 2016-17, reaching the final of the Les James cup losing to AEK BOCO 3-0.

Season 2017-18 saw Broadwell in the top five of the league for most of the season only to fall away at the later part due to the high volume of games played eventually finishing in seventh place. Broadwell did however jointly win the Respect league with Frampton United with a remarkable 100% record of no bookings for dissent.

Season 2018-19 proved difficult for the club
Manager Lee Williams and Scott Albon jointly retired from Management but continue their close links with the club. Season 2019-20 the club moved out of their comfort zone and

appointed a manager from outside the club. Simon Beardsell ex Cheltenham Town Youth academy coach who stood down October 2019. The club were lucky to appoint immediately local coach Stuart Liddington ex Lydney Town, his task to improve on season

2019-20 league position. The extended period away from football due to Covid saw Stuart leave the club and return to Lydney Town 2020. First Team duties are now in the very capable hands of Chris Brain, who’s task is to blend our successful under eighteen team into first team players.

Chris made a positive impact, with Guy Jones as his assistant, bringing in some top players but nurturing the existing squad members seeing them secure some great results during the season, not to forget mentioning the team winning the Les James Cup in a tough battle against Sharpness, seeing Broadwell secure a 3-1 win! A great game and a great achievement foreveryone.

The 2022 season saw the team start with Chris but unfortunately a few weeks in Chris made the decision to step down from the Manager role which made way for Guy Jones to step up from Assistant Manager to Manager.

Guy had some big shoes to fill in what was his debut as a County League Manager but he took on the role and gave it his all. Working hard on keeping morale up and spirits high

p26

HISTORY continued

Guy continued to work with the team he had, making sure each game was a positive vibe, setting small goals and always applauding the results, regardless of win or lose. The season proved to be a tough one for Broadwell and during the final weeks of the we found ourselves at the bottom of the league table and heading towards the relegation zone. It looked a tough gig for Guy and the team to pull through and remain in the County Leaguebut through sheer determination from everyone and the support of all at Broadwell they did it! The final matches gave them the points they needed to remain just above relegation and another season heading into the County League.

Over the past couple of years Broadwell Club have benefited from some dedicated andenthusiastic club members who work tirelessly to improve our facilities, look after our grounds and keep everything tip top. They are fondly known as “The Wednesday Crew” and they are very much appreciated by all involved at Broadwell AFC, so much so they were awarded Clubman of the year at the clubs annual presentation in 2024!

Going into the 2024/2025 season Guy Jones remains as first Team Manager but now with Chris Powell at his side as Assistant Manager.Chris brings a wealth of positive energy, years of football experience and plenty of banter to the squad. The two together have high hopes and the club are excited to see what they can achieve.

By Jon Couch

CHRISTMAS time is for giving as they say, well the fixtures computer has certainly served up a festive treat for Non-League fans everywhere this yuletide.

Traditionally, the Boxing Day fixtures are one of the first fans look out for when the schedule is announced – and this year hasn’t disappointed with a number of crunch derby clashes taking place up and down the country.

Whatever the level, you just can’t beat a derby-day cracker to complete your Christmas, so here are just a few that have caught the eye of our NLP groundhoppers.

The National League always seems to serve up a Boxing Day feast with all the trimmings – and the Aldershot Town v Woking derby is usually at the forefront.

There’s a Tyne-Tees affair when Gateshead and Hartlepool United meet at the International Stadium, while Dagenham v Braintree and Southend United v Ebbsfleet United ensure that Essex and Kent are well represented on the day,

At Step 2, Brackley Town and Leamington looks tasty in National League North, similarly the Derbyshire dual between Buxton and Alfreton Town and an ‘Old Farm’ East Anglian derby with King’s Lynn Town hosting Needham Market.

A big day in the north-east is further demonstrated by Darlington v Scarborough Athletic and Spennymoor Town v South Shields, not to mention Stockton Town v Hebburn Town in the Northern Premier League, Premier Division at Step 3.

The South is equally as intriguing, An all-Hertfordshire clash between Hemel Hempstead Town and St Albans City is a worthy headline act, while Aveley versus Hornchurch and Tonbridge Angels v Maidstone United are big games in Essex and Kent respectively. Chippenham Town v Bath City is often a tasty affair also.

The NPL also serves us up with Matlock Town v Ilkeston Town and Bamber Bridge v Lancaster City, while at Step 4 there are two more all-north east affairs between Bishop Auckland and Consett and Dunston v Newton Aycliffe.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Corby Town is always an eagerly-awaited affair in their respective parts of Northamptonshire, while in an ultra-congested Midlands division, packed with local affairs, unbeaten Quorn and Shepshed Dynamo, separated by just seven miles, battle it out in Leicestershire.

All eyes in Manchester will be on Wythenshawe when bitter rivals FC and Town meet at Hollyhedge Park, while Hednesford Town v Stafford Rangers looks a Boxing Day battle of heavyweights to rival Usyk and Fury.

The Southern League Premier Central is always full of crunch local affairs and Boxing Day doesn’t disappoint with AFC Telford United and Halesowen Town or Bromsgrove Sporting v Stourbridge arguably the pick.

The Somerset clash between Tiverton Town and Taunton Town always whets the appetite in the west country, while Havant & Waterlooville and Gosport Borough love a battle on the south coast.

And if you’re in or around the Beaconsfield area of Buckinghamshire then why not make the trip to Holloways Park where they take on close rivals Flackwell Heath in a lunchtime showdown.

In the Isthmian League, the all-Essex affair between Billericay Town and Canvey Island gets the juices flowing, as does the Sussex derby between Horsham v Bognor Regis Town and the north London clash between Hendon and Potters Bar Town.

Margate versus Ramsgate is undoubtedly the game of the day in Step 4 as the two Kent coast promotion rivals lock horns, while Hartley Wintney v Farnham Town, a local battle of third versus first, is also well worth a visit.

At Step 5 and 6, of course, derbies are a little more commonplace but there are a few, mainly, cross-town affairs that are sure to whet the appetite of the locals.

1874 Northwich v Northwich Victoria ticks all the boxes for a Boxing Day bonanza, as does Newcastle Benfield v Newcastle Bue Star in Ebac Northern League Division One.

And division two produces two more in the form of Chester-le-Street Town versus Chester-le-Street United and Sunderland West End v Sunderland RCA.

The lunchtime affair in the United Counties League Premier North between Newark & Sherwood and Newark Town bares all the hallmarks of a cracker, similarly Northampton ON Chenecks v Northampton Sileby Rangers in Premier South and the Division One fixture between Retford United and Retford.

And, if you’re on your holidays on the Isle of Wight and missing your football fix, then how about East Cowes Victoria v Newport (IoW) in the Wessex League.

Wherever you are in the country, you’re never far from a crunch local derby to savour. Combining the spirit of Non-League with the spirit of Christmas, it’s truly one of the highlights of the football calendar.

But wherever you go and whatever you do, The NLP wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
